AVER -LONESTAR CHAPTER
American Veterans for Equal Rights is the nation’s oldest LGBT Veterans Service Organization, and the only LGBT VSO recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs. For 31 years AVER has worked to secure the right of LGBT people to serve in the United States military. With the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law in 2010 we achieved a major victory, and in the first days of the Biden administration in 2021 Transgender patriots too can now serve openly with authenticity, pride and respect. As a chapter-based organization AVER works to help veterans access benefits from the VA and provides a safe, respectful, and supportive space where the trauma of military service under unjust policies can find understanding and healing. With changing political landscapes, we acknowledge how precious and vulnerable are the rights we fought so long to secure, and AVER will remain ever vigilant to safeguard our freedom for future generations of LGBT Americans and all the men and women who wish to defend our nation’s sacred liberty in the United States armed forces.

At the Rape Crisis Center, we support and empower all survivors of sexual assault. Through our dynamic partnerships, we continue to focus on prevention education to end sexual violence in our community and promote healthy, respectful relationships that are grounded in consent. Our team is dedicated to significantly decreasing the number of those impacted by sexual assault. We practice a multi-disciplinary approach to advocacy, helping to ensure responsive medical care, sensitive law enforcement, and an active prosecution system. Our service providers understand the importance of offering both immediate support to help survivors regain stability and long-term care to address the symptoms of trauma. This is why, at the RCC, we provide a continuum of care that includes our 24-hour crisis hotline, medical accompaniment for survivors receiving forensic exams, and long-term, flexible case management and counseling services. These services are offered free of cost to survivors and their family members, regardless of when the assault occurred or whether it was reported to police. Our vision is a world free from sexual violence. Our mission is to provide help, hope and healing to those affected by sexual violence and to cultivate a safe, nonviolent community. Our collaboration with organizations in the San Antonio community and surrounding areas allows the Rape Crisis Center to expand the reach of services dedicated to ending sexual violence.
